The Tumblr Map is so nice. Since the day it launched it was really cool to see what other tumblrs were geographically near me. I checked the map again last night since it had been a few days since I had last checked and I found that nearly the entire map was filled with dots! I thought shit! There must be MILLIONS of them! Turns out there was 1723. I know this because I view source and saw that they embedded the code to add each marker with javascript. Me being a stats fiend I saved the page, scraped the data out and loaded it into a mysql db. Here are my findings.
Users who use a custom domain: 23%
People who have an avatar: 86%
13 people have animated gifs for avatars (This one is the best)
1 person wearing a Jake and Amir t-shirt
There are only 2 users with the name “Jacob” in it and 1 with the name “Jakob”
Next up is to write a script to determine “Tumblr Follower Reciprocation”. First I will create a new tumblr and fill it with some random content, probably from the first few pages of Digg. I will then write a script to follow these 1723 people and then I’ll see how many people follow me back over time. I probably won’t do this because I don’t want to make the Tumblr staff mad, and I certainly don’t want to add any stress on their database, but it sure would be interesting!
