YouTube + Google maps location mashup!
Nice demo by Geoff Stearns using the new Youtube JS player API along with the Google maps API. A really good use of the ability to sync a video with another javascripty widget

Just finished taking out an old broken garbage disposal and installed my new 1HP GE disposal. Now where is my beer?

Inside of an 80 year old shack that looks like it was never cleaned. I found a few goodies in here like some old old kraft cheese boxes, a “dustless crayon” tin and a bee smoker (top left).

Geni, a very sleek family -tree web app

mrgan:

I never used to care about genealogy - it seemed like stamp collecting, plus self-centeredness. As I grow older, it interests me more, and it doesn’t hurt when there’s a free, excellent tool like this out there. Loads of features, cleverly kept out of sight for the most part.

P.S. If you take it seriously and use Geni as your main store of family info, you should at least consider the privacy issues involved. I decided I was fine with giving them most of this data, but I understand that the potential for abuse is substantial.

I really like Geni, I think it’s important to keep track of this kind of information. I had a couple old binders of tree data that I added to geni a while back. Since then my other family members have filled out at least 600 more relatives. Here are my stats

737 People in My Tree
117 Blood Relatives
620 Inlaws
60 Ancestors
134 Added by Me
21 Invited by Me

Twitter Redux

I’m going to make a better attempt at using Twitter more often. Today I put a little snippet of JS on my tumblr to show my most recent “tweet.” If you want something similar on your tumblr or blog or whatever just copy and paste the code below, and change jacobdehart to your twitter username!
<div id="twitter"></div>
<script type="text/javascript">
function twitter(ob){
    if(ob.length>0){
        document.getElementById('twitter').innerHTML = '<div>“'+ob[0].text+'” <span> via <a href="http://twitter.com/jacobdehart">Twitter</a></span></div>';
    }
}
</script>
<script type="text/javascript"  src="http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/jacobdehart.json?count=1&callback=twitter" ></script>

  • eargang: is "__mifflin__" technically funny to Python users that like The Office? I'm curious.

Using sched at sxsw

Day 1 of SXSW is almost over, very fun so far. Sched.org has helped me a bunch, it feels good having my days planned out. I also noticed a TON of people using the site on their iphones (I think 80% of people here have iphones). Sched also got plugged in the How to Rawk SXSW. So if there was a spike in traffic at 3:45 its because 500 geeks whipped out their macbooks and loaded the site up.
