Working on a desk design for my new office. This is my latest rendition (with the top piece removed.) I wanted to include some cable management as well as easily accessible storage for paper, pencils and chargeable items.

I’m going to be making 6 of these, one of them is going to be a standing desk for myself. I wanted to figure out a way to make it so I can convert it from standing to sitting, but I’m kind’ve stumped right now. If you can think of a good way besides removable stilts let me know! jacobd+ideas at jacobdehart dot com.

Greasemonkey to fix pluralization mistakes

marco:

It’s 2008, everyone. We can spare the extra CPU cycles to avoid ever showing “1 comment”.

Here you go Marco, I made a tiny GM script to change plural mistakes… It doesn’t cover every plural case (things like boxes->box, oxen->ox or fishes to fish ) … but its pretty easy to add special cases. For instance I coded in entries->entry since that seems like it might pop up more often on the internets

Chefs!

mischadehart:

If you’re a young chef who’s dreamed of opening the next avant-garde restaurant in Chicago, I want to take you out to lunch.

Some things I’m looking for specifically on our end are:

  • At least 10 years experience
  • Creativity and mad presentation skills (think Guy Rubino)
  • An interest in molecular gastronomy
  • An incredible attention to detail
  • Somewhat tech-savvy
  • Somewhat of a neat freak
  • An outgoing, energetic personality

Email me, we’ll talk and if we like you, I’ll fill you in on what our vision is. :)

Mischa is looking for the best chef in Chicago to talk to about some amazing ideas she has. Very exciting times ahead, so hit her up!

Anyone using Firefox/Safari can try a (still very busted beta) Dashboard feature we’re working on. Type “listen” on the Dashboard to activate it.

Nice feature, works well for me! Kind’ve wish it had an auto-play option

URL as UI. A must read.
If I visit Amazon.com and search for the album Rock Action by Mogwai, I am directed to a page with this URL: http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Action-Mogwai/dp/B00005AUBA/ ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203311335&sr=8-1

You have to admit that one thing Amazon did do right is move the title of the item to the beginning. Before it was http://www.amazon.com/{bunch of garbage}/title-of-item.

The benefit of putting the title first is that it makes it useful when someone is typing in the url into their location bar. As they type amazon.com/R their most browsers will show a list of previous pages you’ve visited starting with R.

This is a really important technique in my opinion, something that I’m always going to keep in mind when developing new projects. If you HAVE to have some sort of identifier in the url, at least put the pretty part first.

  • Mark Atwood: still hacking on a bloom storage engine, its a fun little project
  • Me: you are? thats awesome! hahaha
  • Mark Atwood: all the C implementations for bloom ive found online suck maybe i will fix them and submit back patches
  • Me: hmm i'll have to think of a good use for a mysql bloom engine to demo once you're done
  • Mark Atwood: this is one of those things that i cant think of a use myself, but im sure people will find a use for it
  • Me: hmm i've got it!
  • i've always wanted to make a backwards image search
  • basically if you have an image you upload it to my site and it will then tell you where the image came from
  • so since i'll have a database of EVERY IMAGE ON THE INTERNET
  • i'll need to test if the image exists efficiently
  • yes.... I am genious
  • damn, i hate it when I spell genius wrong when I refer to myself
